How can AI assist the media?

How can AI assist the media? It is a question worth asking. AI often awakens curiosity as much as it does fear. Still, the media have come to use this tool and celebrates the important assistance it gives them.

Let us have a look at its many functions and accomplishments…

Assist the media? First step: documentary research

The algorithms that are currently ruling multiple facets of our daily lives are also able to assist journalists with their documentary research thanks to indexing and heuristic classification solutions. Techniques like « machine learning » and the extraction of content allow for a fast and more important access to sources and archives, therefore lifting the most difficult and repetitive task off of redaction secretaries’ shoulders.

Creating content automatically

Automated, or rather « augmented » journalism, allows the automatic creation of content. With key words and key phrases as a base, the ability to recognise emerging tendencies and the most influential subjects and by including divergent data; powerful redaction motors can generate automated content. The goal: lighten the workload of journalists substantially, free them from the writing of content with low added value and improving the quality of contents.

Analysing and processing data: a large part of assisting the media !

Another ungrateful task that could be taken on by AI and its solutions is the treatment of « big data »: large amounts of data (like, for example, the 26000 giga of Panama Papers) can be identified, analysed and exploited. The processing of data makes it possible for the AI to create, in a record time, simple news reports, summaries of sports events, election results or even weather reports.

LabSense also provides the completely automated local weather report for approximately 50 towns in service of a large media. This daily production in the form of a description + visual represents a constant tedious mass processing of data taken on by robot reporters.

Tracking Fake News

Known to manipulate rather than to inform, everyone is familiar with fake news! It continues to prosper and feeds the growing mistrust of the public when it comes to the media. Luckily, institutions leading the crusade against this phenomenon can count on AI. Thanks to artificial intelligence it is possible to detect word models that are entirely fabricated. Consequently, it is up to Man to confirm… And to spread the word!

Fact Checking

The first wave of computing in the 90s made it considerably easier, thanks to the internet, to verify facts, citations, sources and images. Today, AI allows us to save a lot of time! It guarantees the trustworthiness of sources due to automated searches in very large document databases.

Keeping social media up to date day by day

Getting up before the break of dawn in order to get a scoop, is what stimulates journalists worthy of their title. Passing the night waking over social media, as to ensure that your posts are being shared, however, is less interesting… It is a task that today could easily be passed down to robot reporters! These robots do not mind keeping up with social media and are capable to add posts respecting the publication policies specific to each of them: the number of characters, hashtags, hyperlinks etc.

In conclusion, we emphasize that AI does not serve to replace the media or to make them abandon their identity. It is simply assistance. AI will not substitute press staff, but has the goal to make their tasks easier in general!

With respect for the deontological code, LabSense makes solutions like Natural language processing (NLP) and Natural-language generation (NLG) accessible to media. Do not hesitate to contact us for more information.

In general, AI can:

  • Make documentary research easier
  • Create content automatically
  • Analyse and process data
  • Track Fake News
  • Fact check
  • Keep social media up to date
